VERY busy day, so no time to write a long blog entry. (cue cheers).
I’ve been reflecting on Ecclesiastes 3 (the second, less famous part) for Sunday evening’s sermon and the final verse has an Ebenezer Scrooge-esque quality about it:
“So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?”
(Ecclesiastes 3:22)
The first sentence reflects the God-given ability we have to achieve job satisfaction. While work is hard, achieving tasks, helping people, doing a good job, getting a fair mark for our studies bring us satisfaction when we have worked hard.
But the second verse to me conjours up an image of the spirit in A Christmas Carol who takes Scrooge and show him what it is like in the future. (The Muppet Christmas Carol is well worth watching if you can’t face the Dickens book!). We don’t know what the future looks like, or the impact of our work on others, but if we do our best in whatever we do we can find some joy and satisfaction – just as God did in creating the world. Just as God does when he looks at you and I.
Bless you!
