just like a child

This pome (sic) emerged from my imagination too late to be included in my book of pomes but it feels important to release it into the wild. It’s called ‘just like a child’

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me …” (Jesus)

You are welcome because you are wriggly, giggly, jiggly and even niggly.

Those who choose to snooze and those who run laps around the pews are welcome here.

Noisy, toysy playful children belong here alongside the quiet, don’t try it thoughtful ones.

Those who join in by answering questions – hands up like at school – have a place alongside those who shout out answers, ignoring the rules.

Party dresses with braided tresses, or won’t come unless his superhero outfit expresses his uniqueness – celebrate your style with us.

Crying, trying, sighing, arms-and-legs-flying children are welcome here.

Hug-needing, breast-feeding, snack-pleading children are part of us.

You’re included even if you’re arms-folding, parent-scolding, personality-moulding head down, don’t ask me anything teenagers.

Elusive, effusive, exclusive, intrusive children belong in the inclusive group of people we call ‘church’.

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Jesus, again)
